Micro Preemie Monday and Emersyn

Micro Preemie Monday

Welcome to the first Micro Preemie Monday of the New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday, and are ready to read more stories of strength and perseverance.

Micro Preemie Monday

Today, we meet Emersyn, as told by his mom Sabrina. Emersyn has been fighting for a long time, but I think his story will show us all that we can’t give up.

Emersyn

1. Tell us about your baby.

My son’s name is Emersyn . He was born at 26 weeks, 5 days at 1 pound 7 oz and 12″ long. He was born because my placenta ruptured, and I have a blood clotting disorder that contributed . I checked into the hospital on 10/3/14 with bleeding and he was born 3 days later on the 6th of October. He is our first and only child.

2. How long was your NICU stay? What was the hardest part?

We are currently still in the NICU. It has been 447 days. The hardest part was the first 4 months. Our sons health was up and down . Every step we took forward ended up in 10 steps back. I slept with one eye open, crying, emotional, scared and praying . His health quickly declined on 1/30/15 and we thought we would lose him. We cried and we prayed . We even had the doctor tell us that our son might be giving up. But we knew better. We had him transferred the next morning to a special hospital in Ohio that deals specifically with his lung disease (BPD). Of all the bad days, that day was probably the worst.

3. Do you know what caused your premature birth?

My placenta ruptured, and I have a blood clotting disorder (I had a clot in my placenta). My son is still in the NICU because his lungs aren’t strong or big enough. He has a trach , BPD, a g-tube and is on oxygen.

4. How are you, your family, and your baby doing now?

Currently we do not have a time frame on when we will be bringing our sweet boy home. We are hoping sometime in the next few months . My husband and I have become closer than we ever were. This experience could have torn us apart but it did just the opposite.

5. What advice would you give to a new preemie or NICU parent?

Don’t ever give up on your baby. Your child is stronger than you could ever imagine! Have faith and get as many prayer chains going as possible for your baby. There is power in prayers, trust me!
Thank you so much Sabrina for sharing your story. I really hope that your family can be together at home very soon, and I promise to keep everyone updated. Please leave comments of support for Sabrina and her family below. Also, feel free to ask any questions.

Almost 500 days in the NICU?!?! That’s heartbreaking. I had a preterm baby with my first (born at 36w4d) but he was healthy as could be and required no NICU time. My second was born at 38w3d. I’m so so so grateful for healthy and term (or near term!) babies.

Yes it sucks to put it bluntly. But it’s been a life changing experience and that part I am grateful for
