Micro Preemie Monday with Zowie

January 11, 2016 By Shann 26 Comments

Micro Preemie Monday

Thank you for joining me for another Micro Preemie Monday.  If you missed last week’s Micro Preemie Monday, you can read the story right HERE.

Today, we will meet Zowie, as told by her mom, Brianna.

Zowie

1. Tell us about your baby.

Zowie Angel was born on July 10, 1010 by emergency c section at 26 weeks and 6 days. She weighed 1 lb. 14 oz and was 12 1/2 inches long.

Preemie Monday2. How long was your NICU Stay? What was the hardest part?

She spent 9 weeks in the NICU, and the hardest part was splitting my time between my 6-year-old and my preemie. The NICU was over an hour away from our home.

3. Do you know what caused your premature birth?

I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix at my 20 week ultrasound. I was already dilated and 90% effaced. I had a rescue stitch put in my cervix the next day and then put in the hospital on bedrest until my water broke 6 weeks later.

4. How are you and your baby doing today?

We are all great! She is a happy. sweet, loving, feisty, hard-headed, stubborn  5-year-old. She is in kindergarten and is doing very well.

5. What advice do you have for other preemie parents?

Talk to other preemie parents. They can really help because they have been there.

Thank you so much for sharing Zowie and your story with us on Micro Preemie Monday, Brianna.

Being on bedrest for an extended period of time can be extremely difficult, especially in the hospital. I was on bedrest at home for most of my pregnancy with the twins, but was only in the hospital for the last two weeks. Both were hard, but being in the hospital was even harder for me with my 2-year-old at home. I can imagine it was very hard for Brianna too, since she also had another child.

Even though Zowie was born early, it should still bring some hope to those in a similar situation. That rescue stitch, also called a cerclage, really made a difference and gave Brianna 6 more weeks.

It’s also really great for me, personally, to see a micro preemie at this age, since the twins will be 4 on their next birthday.

Please leave any questions or comments for Zowie and Brianna below. Thank you!
