Back to Routine

Routine Ready

I was pretty excited to get back into our routine as the holidays came to an end. I even mentioned it HERE. Even though I had the best intentions, our first day back to reality didn’t go exactly as planned.

back to routine

It’s not that we have a detailed schedule or routine we stick to every day, but when three messy, silly boys are home all day instead of just two, it gets a little hectic around here. So, I was looking forward to my oldest heading back to school, me and the twins heading back to the gym, and quiet time during naps (since the oldest refuses naps. Obviously.) Normal school day routine. Hooray!

Back it up

Let’s rewind a little bit first.

About a week before Christmas, our washing machine broke. Terrific. My husband found someone to come and give us a free estimate, but not until after Christmas. Should he find another guy or just wait until after? I told him to wait. I figured a little laundry break wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

Christmas came and went, and left behind a lovely cold for yours truly. Now, it could have been from one of my snotty nosed kids, but they’ve had the same runny noses for quite a while, so I don’t think so. We saw a lot of people over the holidays (way more than normal,) plus my sleep hasn’t improved yet, so I’m sure that my resistance was a little low.

Why am I telling you this? Well, let’s just say we/I/mostly me didn’t do very much housework during the break because of these 2 important details. Which left lots of my son’s clothes to wash for his first week back to school. Plus, we had to find all his school supplies…back pack, lunch bag, snack bag, books, folder….hidden under the piles of new toys and dirty laundry.

The weekend before

So, Saturday and Sunday were spent laundering and laundering some more. Plus, since I could finally breathe out of my nose again, I went to the gym, tried to tackle the mess in my own room, and went on a shopping returning spree of the too many things I bought for Christmas. Gotta pay for that washing repair man somehow.

I succeeded in tiring myself out and pulling a back muscle. Darn you Zumba.

I had planned on going to bed early so I could get up early on the first morning back to school, but that didn’t happen. Darn you free month of Showtime.

Oh! I forgot to mention that my oldest projectile puked on Saturday as he walked through the door. Luckily, it was just car sickness and not something that would bring the whole house down. Phew.

Monday morning

The twins got up bright and early. My husband got up bright and early. My oldest got up bright and early. I did not.

I had to be woken up after initially waking up at 5 am to put a heating pad on my back. But, my back wasn’t as sore, so everything was still OK.

My oldest was already dressed, but not as excited to go back to school (i.e. not at all) as I had hoped. I tried to cheer him up with his choice of breakfast and cartoon, but I think he was worried he was going to miss out on all the fun (i.e. fighting over trains) we were going to have while he was at school.

The twins, of course, did not want the same breakfast, but I was still getting it all done.

Lunch in bag. Check.

Nap mat clean and in extra bag. Check.

Shoes on. Check. Teeth brushed. Check.

Twins yelling the bus was here while we were still brushing hair and wiping toothpaste. Check.

Crying that you’re going to make me miss the bus, Mom and I can’t be late. Check.

Throwing on coat, no hat or gloves, and shoving child out the door while screaming it’s going to be OK. Check.

Luckily, we get to try it all again today.

And yes, I’m still doing laundry.

How was your Monday? Were you happy to be back to your old routine? Did you get your littles off to school OK?

This post made me giggle! My kiddos came down with strep over the weekend so we are living a life of quarantine right now. I’ll be doing lots of laundry today- stripping bed sheets and disinfecting.

LOL! Is it wrong that your post makes me feel better about my own chaotic mornings? We made it out the door yesterday on time but today we all got up late and it was mayhem. “Get dressed! We’re going to miss the bus!!”

Ha! Ha! No, not wrong at all. It feels better to commiserate with those that understand.

I can soooo relate! Yes I was very happy to get back into the old routine after the holidays. My 6 year old son was not and it seemed a little rough in the morning to head back to school. I think we did a little better today but I feel better being back to our normal routine again.

Oh Shann! You have def had a rough few weeks.I will admit though your twins screaming that the bus was here is cute (not for you I’m sure). I hate doing laundry. I really do. So I know the feeling of being happy when you don’t have to do any. I feel that with just myself and my boyfriend, I do so much laundry. I am like yeah…that just just stay in the laundry basket not folded. We all have them days. I hope you are feeling better! I am currently coming down with a cold. Yuck. Hope today is a lot better for you and the boys.

Oh man, I hope everything settles into place soon! I’ve also had a tough time getting back into a routine (and I didn’t even have very many days off!). I had a cold too and even though I’m mostly better now it’s got my sleep schedule out of whack so I could hardly sleep at all last night.

Ugh. That’s the worst…especially since sleep is what you need when you’re not feeling good.

I thrive on routine so when something like a sickness or something breaking happens I do not function well. I hope this week turns out better!

Our Monday was ROUGH! My little guy was bonkers while I was trying to get us ready. This is the first winter since I left teaching, so I didn’t have a winter break. I didn’t think the long weekends with the holidays would be so rough to recover from, but they were! I always dread having to get my toddler back on his routine after a break from routine.

I really wanted to get back to our routine but my littlest love got sick and since then, it’s been downhill. But today was a bit more productive but nothing close to normal. We’ll get back to our old ways soon!

Oh yes life is busy with three boys! I have two but they’re older now, however they are still demanding! I’m glad they are back into their school routine too.
