Easy, Family Friendly Costumes for Halloween

Easy Family Friendly Costumes

Did Halloween sneak up on you like it did me? Wasn’t it just summer? Well, if you are scrambling for some ideas or inspiration, I have a bunch of easy family friendly costumes to make your Halloween stress free this year.

Do you enjoy Halloween? Do you dress up, or just your kids?

I’ve always loved to dress-up. In fact, my favorite game to play as a kid was “dress-up”. My mom had a huge trunk filled with her old clothes, and me and my brother would come up with the craziest outfits. We’d spend hours in the basement pretending to be whatever characters we dreamed up.

Halloween was also my favorite. My mom would make all of our costumes, or we’d dig something out of that trunk. I never wore a store-bought costume until I was an adult.

Now that I’m a mom, I wish I could say that I hand make all of my boys’ costumes. Unfortunately, that sewing gene did not get passed down to me. However, I still like to get creative…with a lot of help from a costume shop or my closet.

All in the Details

Even though my family’s costumes are from a store, it doesn’t mean that we can’t make them our own. I like to either add some home-made element, even if it’s just the make-up or hair. Also, the way we decide to coordinate our family is a little detail that can make them special.

So, I’m sharing some costumes from the past, along with some new ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Also, easy is key. As busy parents, Halloween is something that should bring you joy, not stress. So, I hope you’ll find these easy family friendly costumes helpful for making your holiday fun.

Go For Simple

If you don’t want to get an entire store-bought costume, how about just one element?

Character hoodies are perfect for this!

As an adult, if you don’t like to fully dress-up, this is the perfect option. If you do, just add some details to make it a full costume.

When I was contacted by  TV Store Online I immediately knew I wanted this cute My Little Pony hoodie. It’s mostly cotton, so it’s nice and comfy. Plus, it will keep me warm. Halloween is always chilly here in WI.

TV Store Online has a ton of easy family friendly costumes for your entire group. They have your favorite movie characters, TV characters, and cartoon characters too. The order process was simple, and my packaged arrived in record speed.

For kids, it’s the perfect way to stay warm. Plus, if your school is like ours, they can’t wear full costumes anyways. Here are my boys last year.

I got theirs at H&M, but you can find similar by clicking through this picture:

Coordinate with your Family

I love when my family has costumes that coordinate with each other. Notice, I did NOT say matching!

Coordinating is much easier because you can still let everyone be an individual, but also look cute as a group.

For example….two years ago, Mr. B wanted to be Spider-man. I found the twins actual spider costumes, I made myself a Black Widow costume, and my husband made himself into a web. I’m not sure if everyone got the connection, but I think we looked pretty unique at least!

Now, it doesn’t have to be the entire family that has to coordinate.

This year, we are doing a few different groups.

Little P desperately wanted to be a monkey. Since his brothers had their own ideas, I decided to at least coordinate Dad. I went back to TV Store Online and found him “The Man in the Yellow Hat.”

Not only did the costume look awesome, but it came with a stuffed Curious George! It’s not pictured because someone (aka Little P) has already taken it as his own.

So, we found an even cuter monkey to go with Dad.

How adorable are they going to be?!?!

Big C had to be the Red Power Ranger, so I decided to coordinate me and Mr B with him.

Since neither of us wanted to wear the entire suit, I found the perfect warm hats and shirts. I also found some leggings for myself, all from TV Store Online.

Shop Your Closet

Finally, if your low on funds or looking for something at the last minute, you can turn anything in your closet into a costume with a little creativity.

Remember my “Black Widow” from above? All from my closet.

I also shopped my closet when we decided to have our Peanuts party. I found a Blue dress (a la Lucy) and wrapped a Charlie Brown scarf around my neck. My boys had both store-bought costumes (clearance, of course) for trick or treating. Then, I made all of the boys shirts into Charlie Brown (with a little black tape) for our party. Plus, a coordinating bag!

My husband crafted his own head out of paper mache! Maybe I’ll get him to do a tutorial one day…

Here’s a similar dress and scarf from Amazon. They are both super affordable too!

TV Store Online and Amazon both have ready-made Charlie Brown shirts, so you don’t even have to do the taping yourself. Just click below.

I hope these tips help you figure out your costume situation this year. Remember, the most important part is to have fun and not stress. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself!

Have you found some easy family friendly costumes for your crew this year?

I love that your family is doing two little groups this year. I think it’s fun when families coordinate with each other. My brother and his family are doing a Wizard of Oz theme this year, and I can’t wait to see them all!! 🙂

That’s so cool your husband made that Charlie Brown head. He did an awesome job!

I hate going trick or treating with my kids (I know, bad mom alert) so we never dress up. BUT!! I almost did this year because I found a Lularoe dress that screamed Rainbow Brite so I went to get it… it was gone. Some other lady grabbed it for the same reason! HA!

So I totally want that My Little Pony hoodie just because, lol! I love all your family costumes, they are all so much fun! We’ve done that pretty much too, we did Mario, Princess Peach and Toadie when Ollie was a baby and I think that was my favorite!

The Peanuts costume idea is my favorite! I loved George, too. My boys have grown up watching both and so both of those ideas hit home with me. Great post and ideas!

Good choices and wise advise. I was Charlie Brown two years ago and everyone loves to see that costume.

These are great ideas! I would love to coordinate all 4 of us but it’s a little bit daunting : ) I will have to shop my closet, as you suggest, and see what I can find!

These are so cute! I love dressing my kids up in matching themes, and I look at these guides even throughout the year as we go to Disney World. As long as they let me do it, I’m going to take advantage!

I’ve never been good at family costumes, but I think I’m overcomplicating things. I love your suggestion to keep things simple!

Oh my goodness, all those ideas are so CUTE!!! My hubby and I usually take turns/switch each year – one goes out with the kids, the other stays home to hand out the candy. I usually don’t dress up either way except for maybe a fun hat or something, but last year I was home recovering from foot surgery the day before, so I wrapped the rest of myself in all my Ace bandages to match my bandaged leg and was a mummy – since my girls were a ghost and a witch, we actually all DID match!
